How our Self Assessment service works

Who it’s for

Our Self Assessment tax return support is for anyone with income that HMRC doesn’t already tax at source. This includes self-employed individuals, sole traders, company directors, landlords and anyone with capital gains or dividend income. If you’ve had a P800 from HMRC, a nudge letter, or you’re not sure whether you need to file this year, this service is built for you.

When to bring in Self Assessment support

  • You’ve become self-employed, taken on a directorship or started renting out a property for the first time.
  • You’ve sold a property, shares or other asset and may owe Capital Gains Tax (CGT).
  • You receive dividend income, or your income has grown enough that the High Income Child Benefit Charge now applies.
  • You’ve missed a previous year’s deadline and need to get compliant with HMRC.
  • You’d rather not endure another stressful submission with the January deadline looming over you.

How does filing work?

A Self Assessment tax return is the return you must submit to HMRC each year if you owe tax on income that hasn’t already been taxed through PAYE, such as self-employment income, rental income, capital gains or dividends. Payments on Account (POA) are advance payments that some taxpayers make twice a year towards their next tax bill, based on the previous year’s liability.

Each return follows the same steps:

  1. You send us your income and expense records.
  2. We prepare your return and calculate your liability.
  3. We file it online with HMRC on your behalf.

We’ll confirm exactly what you owe and when it’s due well before the deadline.

If this is your first time filing, there’s a step people often miss: you can’t register for Self Assessment online until HMRC has issued your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), and that can take around six weeks to arrive by post once you’ve registered. This means that if you only register in January, ahead of the 31 January filing deadline, your UTR may not arrive in time for you to file. The earlier you register, the more breathing room you have.

How long does a return take?

Most returns are prepared and ready to review within 15 working days of receiving your full records, with online filing confirmed to you as soon as HMRC accepts the submission. The registration deadline for anyone filing for the first time is 5 October, following the end of the tax year, and missing it can mean HMRC charging a penalty. The earlier we have your information, the more time we have to plan around your bill and help you decide how and when to pay it. If you’ve already missed the 5 October deadline, we can still help you get your UTR issued and your return filed by 31 January, but registering in good time gives you far more room to get it right.

What does Self Assessment cost?

Self Assessment fees depend on the complexity of your income. The fees will be impacted by factors such as whether you have one income source or several and whether property or capital gains are involved, so we’ll always confirm a fee before we start any work. As part of our range of personal accounting services, Self Assessment advice is provided on an affordable basis alongside any wider Income Tax, CGT or Inheritance Tax (IHT) planning you need.

What changes once your return is handled

  • Your return is filed accurately and on time.
  • A clear answer is given on what you owe and when it’s due, well ahead of the 31 January deadline.
  • Penalties and interest are avoided through early, correct filing.
  • The stress of the approaching deadline is removed once you have a clear grasp of your tax obligations.

Self Assessment tax return FAQs

What’s the first step to getting my return filed?2026-09-01T14:01:24+00:00

Speak to our tax team to talk through your income sources and any deadlines already on the horizon. We’ll confirm a fee and get your return underway.

What do I need to provide to get started?2026-09-01T14:01:03+00:00

Records of your income and expenses for the relevant tax year, whether that’s self-employment records, rental statements, dividend vouchers or details of any assets sold. We’ll tell you exactly what’s needed for your situation once we understand it.

I’ve missed previous years’ returns. Can you help me catch up?2026-09-01T14:00:31+00:00

Yes. We regularly help new clients bring overdue returns up to date and can advise on minimising the penalties and interest that have already accrued along the way.

I don’t earn much. Do I still need to file?2026-09-01T14:00:09+00:00

Possibly. Filing requirements are based on the type of income you receive, rather than being exclusively tied to the amount earned, so even modest self-employment, rental or dividend income can create a filing obligation. It’s worth confirming rather than assuming you’re under a threshold.

Isn’t Self Assessment something I can already do for free through HMRC’s own website?2026-09-01T13:59:23+00:00

Yes. HMRC’s system is perfectly capable of taking your numbers and calculating a bill. What it won’t do is tell you if you’ve missed an allowable expense, flag a relief you’re entitled to or warn you that an enquiry is more likely because of how something’s been recorded. Expert support can give you greater control over your tax bill.

As a sole trader, why would I pay for something I could do myself?2026-09-01T13:58:59+00:00

Plenty of sole traders do file their own return and, for a simple first year, that can work fine. Where it tends to change is once you’re claiming expenses, deciding whether to incorporate or weighing up a big purchase. There is value in seeing someone who’s seen hundreds of similar businesses make that call.

What’s the most common mistake people make with Self Assessment?2026-09-01T13:58:37+00:00

Missing the 5 October registration deadline in the tax year they first need to file, which can leave tax payers scrambling to register and file before 31 January with far less time than they should have had.

Who needs to complete a Self Assessment tax return?2026-09-01T13:58:11+00:00

You’ll need to submit a Self Assessment if you have earned income from self-employment, capital gains or dividends, among other untaxed income sources. If you’re unsure whether this applies to you, it’s worth checking rather than assuming it doesn’t.

What is a Self Assessment tax return?2026-09-01T13:57:43+00:00

A Self Assessment tax return has to be submitted to HMRC every year if you owe tax on income you’ve received that hasn’t already been taxed through PAYE, such as self-employment, rental, capital gains or dividend income.

What happens if I don’t file my Self Assessment on time?2026-09-01T13:57:15+00:00

HMRC applies an automatic £100 penalty for filing even one day late, even if you don’t owe any tax. After three months, daily penalties of £10 apply for up to 90 days, followed by further penalties at six and twelve months, plus late payment penalties of 5% on any outstanding tax at set intervals and late payment interest.
